LG Display Zeroing in on 3D UHD TV Market

LG Display Zeroing in on 3D UHD TV Market | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

LG Display Co. proclaimed this year as the new “first year of 3D,” as it heralds a new era of Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.

The TV giant vows to lead the global 3D market this year by focusing on China.

Ever since the first 3D TV rolled out in 2011, the company has enjoyed its status as a forerunner in 3D-related technology, but it hasn’t been able to capitalize on it owing to the stagnancy of the 3D TV market.

The company is aiming at reigniting 3D boom by using the popularity of UHD TV.

Can UHD Resurrect 3D?

Can UHD Resurrect 3D? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Like 3D, I haven’t been a UHD booster, either.

Consumers will see no resolution benefit at sizes below 70 inches, and there’s no broadcast or packaged 4K formats as yet.

All consumers are buying is an over-priced flat screen TV, and sometimes not even that given the recent ridiculous rush of curved UHDs.

But UHD, and in particular OLED UHD, solves many of 3D’s annoying problems.

Autostereo (Glasses Free) 3DTV In 2014: Sizzle or Fizzle?

Autostereo (Glasses Free) 3DTV In 2014: Sizzle or Fizzle? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

It's quite apparent that Ultra High Definition will continue to be one of the hottest buzzwords for the consumer electronics industry this year and it will likely become a driving force among many of the largest TV manufacturers.

However I firmly believe that the industry as a whole will come to understand that 3D and UHD are not mutually exclusive.

Instead, I see 3D technology essential to the near term adoption of UHD and vice versa.

The two technologies are in a sense, mutually beneficial killer apps.

Will glasses-free 3D finally take off in 2014?

Will glasses-free 3D finally take off in 2014? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

A number of companies will be pushing the technology and its features at next month's International CES in the hopes of reigniting interest in 3D, a feature that many consumers feel is simply a fad.

The BBC's head of 3D, Kim Shillinglaw, said she believed 3D has so far failed to take off because it is not a straightforward process.

"Watching 3D is quite a hassly experience in the home. You have got to find your glasses before switching on the TV.

I think when people watch TV they concentrate in a different way. When people go to the cinema they go and are used to doing one thing -- I think that's one of the reasons that take-up of 3D TV has been disappointing."

Perhaps not needing to reach for the glasses for a truly immersive experience might change all of that.
