At CES 2014 in Las Vegas, Philips has presented a new 28" monitor that sports 4K resolution and is surprisinglyaffordable.

Estimated retail price: US$1,199

Apple iPad Pro With 4K Display Now In Development By Foxconn

Apple iPad Pro With 4K Display Now In Development By Foxconn | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

When Tim Cook says Apple has "Big Plans" for 2014, perhaps what consumers can look forward to is the high resolution in their new products.

According to latest rumors, Apple will be producing the "iPad Pro" with a 4K Retina display.

There are reports coming from supply chains in China claiming that Foxconn has already display a model for the 12.9-inch 2K iPad Pro, and is currently developing the 4K model and the display resolution could be 4096x3072 pixels.

If we were to ask the more essential question: Other than watching high resolution movies, what would you do with an insanely high resolution iPad?

Well, Duke University researchers are developing a 1 billion pixel camera that would capture photos with incredible details.

Other than that, with breakthroughs in medical imaging and virtual 3D models, the high resolution just might be useful in such 'Pro' situations.

2013 Mac Pro Review: Apple’s New Desktop Boasts Dramatic Redesign, Dramatic Performance

2013 Mac Pro Review: Apple’s New Desktop Boasts Dramatic Redesign, Dramatic Performance | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Apple's new Mac Pro is a sight to behold: In black aluminum with an eye-catching cylindrical design, there's little chance you'll ever mistake it for any other computer.

For anyone who’s been looking forward to a replacement for their aging gray tower Mac Pro, and for anyone who has the money and is willing to spend it, the Mac Pro is a no-brainer, but for the rest of us, we needn’t reach quite so high to touch the sky when it comes to Apple’s line of OS X hardware.

Mac Pro teardown reveals simple repair process and upgradeable CPU:

Review: Seiki's 39-inch 4K TV as a display for a 2013 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris

Review: Seiki's 39-inch 4K TV as a display for a 2013 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

On Black Friday week, Amazon ($449) and Sears ($499) went into a price war on the 39-inch "120Hz" Seiki 4K displays culminating in a Sub-$400 price (that I jumped on) for the 39-inch variant.

Will I be using this as my main display? No.

30Hz is a little hard on the eyes, and the MacBook Pro’s Iris graphics really isn’t up to the task of pushing 4K out of its HDMI 1.4 port.

However, as we look forward to the Mac Pro and its ability to throw 3 different 4K displays around at much higher framerates, this is a look into the near future.

Philips has put together a great looking monitor that's easy on the eyes and impresses display aficionados such as ourselves.

We'll have to reserve our final judgment on the Brilliance 288P until we can do something other than watch a looping demo, but it looks promising as a 4K panel that blows most TN panels out of the water.

If Philips can deliver something that can truly play Battlefield 4 and other 4K capable games at 60fps, the Dutch technology company might have a 4K winner on its hands.

Here’s whats coming at CES 2014 to make your home theater look antiquated

Here’s whats coming at CES 2014 to make your home theater look antiquated | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Never mind that nobody knows exactly what to call it (Ultra HD 4K, 4K Ultra HD, UHD, just Ultra HD, or just 4K), the industry has settled on the next big thing for television and, unlike the tepid response 3D technology received in years prior, Ultra HD is in a strong position to take over in the years to come.

It won’t just be Ultra HD televisions that will be making headlines this year, either.

4K content and the means by which it will be delivered to viewers is also coming.

UHD: Trouble With the Curve

UHD: Trouble With the Curve | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Curved screens present three major difficulties: first, the arc cuts down on off-angle viewing, reducing the number of potential viewers at Super Bowl parties and family film nights; second, curved sets can’t be wall mounted (at least not the ones I’ve seen so far); and, third, a curved TV completely defeats the purpose of a “flat” TV, which is to take up less space.

Curved UHDs answer the riddle of how a TV can be thin and fat at the same time.

If a wide curved screen were really more advantageous for the viewer, movie theaters would have installed them years ago.

They aren’t (except for IMAX), so they don’t.

It is twice higher than the American BIG TEX statue and seven times heavier than an adult elephant.

Well, this is not a myth.

The screen is being produced by Leyard and will be put into use in the world in the spring of 2014.

UHD TV Panels Make Big Strides in Q3

UHD TV Panels Make Big Strides in Q3 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

The global market for ultra-high-definition (UHD) TV panels is forecast to exceed 3 million units by the end of 2013, up from a practically nonexistent base last year, as high-priced televisions that make use of the panels gradually make their way into retail.

Shipments worldwide of UHD TV panels in the third quarter reached an estimated 1.2 million units, up threefold from approximately 400,000 units in the second quarter, according to research firm IHS.

Those numbers join the 170,000 panels shipped in the first quarter, and will also be added to the 1.3 million new panels forecast to go out in the fourth quarter.

By the end of the year, total UHD TV panels will amount to 3.1 million units, a hefty increase in light of the starting low base last year of just 30,000 units.

With high growth rates forecast for the next year, most panel suppliers are planning various lineups and aggressive shipment targets expected to exceed

20 million units in 2014.
