Blackmagic's New URSA is a Serious 4K Production Camera

Blackmagic's New URSA is a Serious 4K Production Camera | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

The Blackmagic URSA was designed to be the beastly cinema camera that everyone wanted the 2.5K and 4K Blackmagic cameras to be.

After rigging them out for higher end productions, the other BMCC cameras became larger than the URSA.

As a result, Blackmagic took the key wishlist items and packaged them into a full size production camera with little compromise.

Notably, the body and components are built to be upgraded.

While the URSA is currently configured with a 4K sensor capable of delivering 60fps, the rest of the camera can handle up to an 8K sensor at 30fps.

The first 4K images are rolling off the 4K production camera, shot by Grant Petty himself no less.

I’m hugely impressed with the image.

It breaks new ground for resolution for an accessibly priced movie camera.

The download is absolutely huge at 9GB. If you just want a glance at what’s on offer, you’re in luck because I’m going to guide you through the images now and do some frame grabs.

Blackmagic CEO: “Low frame rate UHD is NOT good enough”

Blackmagic CEO: “Low frame rate UHD is NOT good enough” | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

After a short delay caused by issues related to the sensor, Blackmagic Design says its £2500 4K Super 35mm digital camera will ship this quarter.

“The entire world will buy Ultra HD at some point,” predicts CEO and founder Grant Petty.

“The increasing pixel density of screens make it logical.

In Europe, Ultra HD is important because broadcasters have been hobbled by electing 1080i rather than 1080p HD, so the jump in resolution to 4K will be felt.

Blackmagic Confident Pocket Cinema Camera with RAW & 4K Camera Will Both Ship in July

Blackmagic Confident Pocket Cinema Camera with RAW & 4K Camera Will Both Ship in July | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

While they’ve rarely had major delays with their other equipment, the company has had some serious problems delivering the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

If you’ve had a pre-order on the camera, you certainly know this by now.
With the announcement of two new cameras at NAB, the Pocket Cinema Camera and Production Camera 4K, some of these same questions have come up again.

Can they deliver in July as promised? Will there be delays that push camera availability weeks, or even months from the original release date?

Andre Bontems's insight:

I love Blackmagic and I am actually using most of their products! But ontime delivery has not always been one of their strength :)

However the quality of the products and their very competitive pricing have made me tolerant of shipping delays!

It’s 4K All The Way, Drawing Line in The Sand, Storing Stuff. | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Like a bunch of buff guys, Blackmagic Design hit NAB this year and had people talkin’ and gawkin’.

The Aussie Thunder Down Under crew showed they were seriously into the mainstream of content shooting/production.

Television and movies always seem to be about surprise, drama and that just about summed up this year’s NAB (National Association of Broadcasters).

Everyone is talking up 4K (4X is better than your TV stuff today), Ultra HD, cloud production/storage and closer connections with the customer and consumer.

Walking to the waiting plane, we passed the usual signage and the one for Thunder Down Under just seemed to fit for the “big news” this year.

Switching From 1080 to Ultra HD

Switching From 1080 to Ultra HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

With 4k displays already showing up in viewers' living rooms and ATSC 3.0, the step from 1080i to 1080p may be incrementally too small to be worthwhile.

I recently started seeing advertisements from BlackMagic for their ATEM Production Studio 4k switcher and like their camera, the price for the unit is surprisingly low.

According to their website, the top of the line model is $2,495 and is self-contained in that it includes a 1 M/E 10 input switcher, DVE, graphics and keying and a multiview monitor driver.

Carlos Oropeza's curator insight, July 18, 2014 6:08 PM

This digital journal was written by Bill Hayes. Currently he is the  Director of Engineering and Technology at lows public television. The objectivity in this article is to inform what to do if you want to switch from 1080 to 4k or Ultra HD. In the middle of the journal I noticed their objectivity changed a little to influence his audience, when he started discussing about the price and portability of the black magic products. I agree with most of the things he pointed about the advantages that black magic design has on the market.

6 Cameras to Ease Your Way Into Shooting 4K Video

6 Cameras to Ease Your Way Into Shooting 4K Video | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

To record in 4K or not to record in 4K, that is the (admittedly awkward) question many photographers and videographers are grappling with. As momentum continues to build behind the new format, you might find yourself grappling with it, too.

If you’re considering the jump to 4K, we’ve selected six video cameras that deliver it in a package that’s affordable, preserves your ability to shoot in HD and is relatively easy to use if you know your way around an HD digital SLR. Workflows for 4K are still maturing, so some solutions require proprietary memory formats and/or software for post-processing, but hey, no pain, no gain, right?
