Analyzing Ultra HD

Analyzing Ultra HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

What is “television” anymore? Is it a piece of hardware? Cable or satellite service?  Over-the-top streaming from companies like Netflix and Amazon? Something you watch on a tablet or smartphone?

CES 2014 provided an answer to those questions: It’s all of those and more.

Polaroid is already planning to cut the price of its $1,000 4K TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Like the high school kid who doesn't get invited to go out partying with the in-crowd, Polaroid decided that the best way that it could turn some jaded heads was with a dramatic reinvention.

The company pulled up outside CES with a whole new range of cameras, tablets and a 4K TV, the latter of which was one of a small few that broke the $1,000 barrier.

When we went to examine the 50-inch UHD panel, an executive remarked that this un-smart TV would likely get a price cut before it hits store shelves in order to undercut rivals from Vizio and Kogan.

Forget 4K, it's an 8K TV you Want!

Forget 4K, it's an 8K TV you Want! | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

4K has been the talk of CES and looks likely to go big in 2014, but is it needed?

Invest in 4K now and you can be sure that it'll only be a few years before a more expensive 8K set, with 8K movies, seems necessary.

Such is the rate at which formats evolve now that HD TV is pretty much still a teenager by TV standards.

Here's what your UHD-TV will look like

Here's what your UHD-TV will look like | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

About 75 new ultra high definition (UHD) televisions are expected to be showcased here at CES this week, along with promises by content providers of more 4K digital content to feed them.

UHD-TV offers almost four times the resolution of mainstream 1080p flat screens, and about 500,000 of them are expected to sell in the U.S. this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

That's up from 60,000 UHD-TVs sold in the U.S. last year.

BY 2015, that number is expected to more than double to 1.25 million sets.

TV sales are picking up as consumers begin to replace their first flat-screen HDTVs, but don't expect a significant surge in sales of UHD-TVs this year.

Philips has put together a great looking monitor that's easy on the eyes and impresses display aficionados such as ourselves.

We'll have to reserve our final judgment on the Brilliance 288P until we can do something other than watch a looping demo, but it looks promising as a 4K panel that blows most TN panels out of the water.

If Philips can deliver something that can truly play Battlefield 4 and other 4K capable games at 60fps, the Dutch technology company might have a 4K winner on its hands.

TV makers fire up hype machine over UltraHD

TV makers fire up hype machine over UltraHD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

TV makers have been in search of the next big thing since 3-D TV sets sputtered in the marketplace.

But some industry analysts warn that sharper picture alone may not be enough to coax people to spend thousands of dollars on a new set.

The advantages are not as clear as they were in the shift more than a decade ago from old-fashioned analog TVs to high definition, which offered a radically improved picture quality as well as a dramatically slimmer shape than the bulky cathode-ray tube sets that once dominated living rooms.

"It is simply not as compelling as the switch from regular analog TV to high definition," said Colin Dixon, founder of research firm NScreenMedia. "The issue here is the switch from (high definition) to 4K is not as big of a quality upgrade."

CES 2014: Samsung's HS Kim predicts ultra-HD TVs will replace HD soon

CES 2014: Samsung's HS Kim predicts ultra-HD TVs will replace HD soon | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Samsung is betting big on ultra-high-definition televisions.

So big, in fact, that HS Kim, executive vice president of Samsung's visual display business, is predicting that ultra-HD sets will soon dominate the consumer market, eclipsing HD TVs -- despite high prices and a lack of ultra-HD content.

"I think it's pretty obvious that consumers are going to choose UHD TVs," Kim said during an interview with The Times at International CES in Las Vegas this week.

"The only question is how affordable the UHD TVs are going to be; and as technology advances, the prices will drop.

So I think it's very highly likely that consumers will choose UHD TVs, and I think this will happen faster than anticipated."

Ultra HD and HEVC Look Forward to a Big 2014

Ultra HD and HEVC Look Forward to a Big 2014 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

4K television, also known as Ultra HD, was one of the hits at the CES show.

This is an important issue because healthy adoption of Ultra HD will means equally widespread deployment of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), which is the successor to MPEG-4 and more or less a requisite network upgrade.

Due to its higher compression capabilities, HEVC will increase broadband capacity across the board.

4K Ultra HD television adoption will happen faster than anticipated

4K Ultra HD television adoption will happen faster than anticipated | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Despite being tempted by a number of great deals on televisions during Black Friday, I’ve already made up my mind that the next set I purchase will be 4K Ultra HD compatible.

4K Ultra HD televisions are expected to be the next big thing in home entertainment.

Unlike the short-lived 3D fad, 4K televisions will deliver real value with four times the resolution of current HD sets that populate the majority of households in the US.

Samsung is leading the way as it has increased its 4K television lineup from just three models last year to 10 this year, ranging in size from 50 inches up to the 110-inch monster that was on display at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Industry experts predict that just under half a million 4K sets will be sold this year versus just 60,000 during 2013.

Sharp Unveils New 8K Television Systems

Sharp Unveils New 8K Television Systems | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Every year at CES, companies are eager to push the limits to technology and have never been shy about unveiling new television products.

For those who don’t need 4K or want something bigger, well Sharp has something in store for you guys with their pair of 8K television sets.

Yup, you heard that right, according to Sharp, “4K today, 8K tomorrow.”

One of these 8K devices will be a glasses-free 3D television and was created together with Philips and Dolby to help deliver a very high-resolution glasses-free 3D viewing experience.

Given that 4K has yet to be the standard, we can only imagine the sharpness one might experience with 8K.

As we said earlier, not all these products are for sale and with Sharp’s 8K offerings, they are meant to be a “glimpse into the future”.

CES 2014 - First look at the latest Chinese Ultra HD and OLED TVs

CES 2014 - First look at the latest Chinese Ultra HD and OLED TVs | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Chinese manufacturers Hisense, TCL and Konka give the big boys a run for their money!

As we walked around the huge stands for LG and Samsung at this year’s CES, we realised there was a time when the Korean manufacturers were considered inferior to their Japanese competitors.

How things have changed and now LG and Samsung dominate the TV market whilst the big Japanese names are struggling to even remain relevant.

However the South Koreans had better not get too complacent because China’s emergence as a global economic power means it can only be a matter of time before their consumer electronics companies begin to have a similar impact.

In fact if CES 2014 is remembered for anything it might well be as the year that the Chinese manufacturers truly arrived and if one company can be seen as leading the way it’s Hisense.
