Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

We previously tested the 32-inch Sharp PN-K321H, which uses Sharps IGZO technology and was the first 4K monitor we tested.

Now Dell comes with three new 4K monitors, a 32-inch model, a 28-inch model and the 24-inch UP2414Q, subject of this review.

The recommended retails price of the UP2414Q is around 1,450 euro including VAT (about £1,225). While a lot of money, it's a steal compared to the 32-inch Sharp priced around £3,195 when it came out.

Not only that, the new Dell monitors are also supposed to have better colour-rendering than the Sharp PN-K321H.

Dell Teases Sub-$1000 28-Inch Ultra HD Monitor

Dell Teases Sub-$1000 28-Inch Ultra HD Monitor | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

We may be seeing the first glimpses of Ultra HD/4K gaming becoming an affordable possibility for mainstream consumers.

Earlier this week the company released a new pair of UltraSharp Ultra HD panels geared toward graphics professionals, but also teased a future 3840 x 2160 display clocking in at less than $1000.

UltraHD, also commonly known as 4K, packs four times the resolution of Full HD (1080p), but until now has been a luxurious display option reserved for design professionals and wealthy A/V enthusiasts.

Dell Unveils 32" Ultrasharp with 3840x2160 Native Resolution

Dell Unveils 32" Ultrasharp with 3840x2160 Native Resolution | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Dell recently pulled the wraps off their latest Ultrasharp 32″ display.

This gargantuan display is expected to be Dell’s flagship professional series monitor featuring an Ultra HD resolution of 3840×2160 (140ppi) based off of Sharp’s IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) display technology.

As expected of a Dell Ultrasharp display, the monitor will feature a wide color gamut of 1.07 billion colors, a whopping 64 times more colors than a standard TN panel based monitor.

No official word on pricing at this time although I’d expect the display to be priced somewhere in line with ASUS’s 31.5″ Ultra HD display, which currently runs for around $3,500.

Dell expects the monitor to be available in Q4 of this year.

This is what you want to watch for as pixel counts go up. Does the gamut also go up. The TV's I saw were not ready for 4K simply for this reason.

How this screen fares in practice has a two-fold answer. On the one hand text and images look incredibly sharp and detailed. Viewing high-quality photographs on this screen is a real pleasure.

Gaming on 4K resolution is truly a joy.

The incredible sharpness and outstanding colours definitely have added value, it's really something that needs to be experienced in person.

Current high-end graphics cards are not quite on the level of being able to provide smooth framerates on high quality settings, but fps-capped games can definitely be enjoyed in this resolution.

The future of PC gaming looks even more rosy on these types of displays.
