The two companies have agreed on a partnership which will offer Netflix’s coming 4K streaming service on 12 of LG’s latest UHD TVs.


The new TVs are primed and ready for optimal 4K streaming thanks to the inclusion of the latest HEVC compression codec, H.265, as well as HDMI 2.0, which allows them to stream at 60 fps.


The app is designed to run on LG’s spanking new webOS smart platform, and LG has touted the combination of all factors will provide an experience which it says will “…change the way consumers enjoy television.”

Luxemburg has hosted SES Industry Days, where world’s leading satellite operator SES, together with its partners Harmonics and Broadcom Corporation carried out the transmission of the first Ultra HD signal by HEVC standard, via ASTRA satellite(19,2° E).

 

Compared with the standard MPEG-4, HEVC is 50% more efficient.

 

DVB-S2 satellite communication standard has been used for the transmission of the Ultra HD signal at the 20 Mb/sec rate.

 

According  to the company representatives, this was the first live video-transmission of Ultra HD(3840 x 2160 pixels) by HEVC standard, while previously only H.264 had been used.

And if the lack of consumer enthusiasm—coupled with the challenges of production and distribution—are significant enough, is 4K Ultra HD dead on arrival?


Not necessarily. It may take a few years to get to 4K production, and a few more to get to 4K distribution, but the drumbeat of progress means we will eventually arrive there.

Chips&Media’s WAVE410 HEVC decoder targets an extensive range of high-end devices that are capable of 4K video playback from smartphones to UHDTV/UHD set-top boxes built on state-of-the-art architecture and technologies with high performance and energy efficiency.

 

So far, software decoding was mainly used when replaying HEVC videos, which is more power-consuming and burdensome to CPUs. WAVE410 is an HEVC decoder core IP that supports 4K (4096x2160) resolution, about four times greater than HD video.

 

One core IP can replay a series of 4K images at 30 frames per second on the real-time basis. 8 cores bound together, it can play videos up to 8K (8192x4320) images at 60 frames per second. The company reduced the BUS bandwidth to half, enhancing the memory efficiency. 

The industry expected this IP will be included in a chip design and applied to a full-scale production from mid next year.

At the 2013 NAB Show, the proliferation of next-generation MPEG compression technology, namely HEVC-compatible (aka, H.265) software and hardware encoders and decoders, gave the impression that the technology necessary to move and then display large data files containing the highest quality HD (1080p/60) and 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels for delivery or 4096 x 2160 pixels for production) content was ready to be deployed.


This would clearly improve the value of bandwidth-constrained networks.


However, a lack of an industry standard, the need for significantly more processing power to accurately compress such files and the ongoing move towards the current state-of-the-art (and standardized in January) AVC (H.264) technology to distribute full HD 1080p files would seem to make High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) a far off reality.

HEVC video compression technology is claimed to have the ability to reduce  bandwidth by up to 50% compared with the existing MPEG-4 AVC standard while  still delivering same quality of viewing experience.

The process of delivering a new video compression design will happen in a gradual manner.


It will take a substantial amount of time to achieve significant gains again but it is the general belief that this will be possible in the future.


The currently used methodology is well-established and it has delivered positive results for more than 20 years.


There are currently a number of techniques that needs further work and could be investigated in detail; among those we could include: even larger blocks and transforms, more complex intrapicture prediction methods (including short distance intra prediction), more complex intrapicture prediction methods (considering more motion vector candidates), additional filtering processes, prediction of luma and chroma data from each other, dictionary based coding, alternative transforms and alternative entropy coding methods.

SES, a leading satellite operator, together with its partners Harmonic, a video delivery infrastructure specialist, and Broadcom Corporation, a multimedia chip designer, said recently that they have pioneered the first Ultra HD transmission in the new HEVC standard live from an Astra satellite at 19.2° East.


The end-to-end demonstration which was presented at the SES Industry Days in Luxembourg used Harmonic's ProMedia Xpress and a HEVC decoder reference-design system based on Broadcom's BCM7445 device for receiving HEVC encoded ultra HD television transmission.


The signal was broadcast in DVB-S2 using a data rate of 20Mb/s.

European-based satellite bandwidth provider SES has succesful tested an end-to-end file transmsission solution for UltraHD content using the H.265 coding scheme.


The compressed 3840×2160 pixel (4K) signal was broadcast from an Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East in DVB-S2 using a data rate of 20 Mbps.


According to those that saw it, the live transmission provided significant improvements in file size and image quality when compared to H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) compression.

There can be little doubt that there is going to be a huge increase in the demand for 4K footage over the next few years and much of that early demand will have to satisfied by stock material.

 

Currently broadcasters can turn to an enormous library of SD and HD material compiled over decades of shooting, but that won't cut the mustard when intercut with newly acquired 4K footage.
