After suffering a pretty disappointing year overall with its HD TVs, it’s good to see LG bringing its A game to the burgeoning world of UHD.

Its handling of native UHD sources is second to none, its sound quality is streets ahead of most skinny TV rivals thanks to an innovative dropdown speaker bar, and the use of direct LED lighting delivers some tangible advantages.

LG Display Co. proclaimed this year as the new “first year of 3D,” as it heralds a new era of Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.

The TV giant vows to lead the global 3D market this year by focusing on China.

Ever since the first 3D TV rolled out in 2011, the company has enjoyed its status as a forerunner in 3D-related technology, but it hasn’t been able to capitalize on it owing to the stagnancy of the 3D TV market.

The company is aiming at reigniting 3D boom by using the popularity of UHD TV.

LG Claims World’s Largest OLED TV Title With 77-inch Ultra HD Set - Digits - WSJ

LG Claims World’s Largest OLED TV Title With 77-inch Ultra HD Set - Digits - WSJ | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

LG is making the first declaration of awesomeness with a triple threat:

The company says it will debut a 77-inch OLED television that will boast the Ultra HD resolution – 3,480 x 2,160 pixels – and a curved screen.

This makes it the world’s largest OLED set, says LG, an important bragging point because OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology promises unparalleled contrast and response time, not to mention the thinnest screens.

Instead of requiring a separate light source to illuminate pixels, like LCD TVs, OLED pixels illuminate themselves when they receive electric current.

OLED has long been the “next great thing” in the TV business – and at the CES show – but TVs based on the technology have been slow to hit the market.

As for that curved shape, TV makers argue that it offers a more immersive picture.

The £5,000 Ultra High-Definition TVs that could be obsolete by next year

The £5,000 Ultra High-Definition TVs that could be obsolete by next year | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Families paying at least £5,000 for a new generation of Ultra HD televisions could find the sets are effectively obsolete within a year.

The first generation of these sets take existing high definition TV broadcasts and ‘upscale’ them to deliver much sharper pictures.

Critics say most of the first generation sets will not be able to handle the amount of the data involved with the result that viewers could be met with a blank screen

A leading industry analyst says the problem stems from the fact that most of the first generation sets have outdated HDMI connector ports, which link the TVs to the set top boxes that receive the signals.

The situation threatens to create a repeat of the consumer rip-off that saw millions buy so-called ‘HD Ready’ TV sets around 2006 only to find they would not broadcast true high definition channels.
