"Usable" Workspace Resolution at 4K UHD

"Usable" Workspace Resolution at 4K UHD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

With all the talk at CES being about 4k and a number of new options having come out in the last month and about to hit the table, I wanted to follow up with a discussion about how physical monitor size really matters if you want to use that additional resolution to increase your workspace resolution.

...

Personally I think 50" is the sweet spot but you gotta have a huge desk for that.

Review: Seiki's 39-inch 4K TV as a display for a 2013 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris

Review: Seiki's 39-inch 4K TV as a display for a 2013 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

On Black Friday week, Amazon ($449) and Sears ($499) went into a price war on the 39-inch "120Hz" Seiki 4K displays culminating in a Sub-$400 price (that I jumped on) for the 39-inch variant.

Will I be using this as my main display? No.

30Hz is a little hard on the eyes, and the MacBook Pro’s Iris graphics really isn’t up to the task of pushing 4K out of its HDMI 1.4 port.

However, as we look forward to the Mac Pro and its ability to throw 3 different 4K displays around at much higher framerates, this is a look into the near future.

Enhanced UHD TV Panels Already Being Discussed | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

The 4K ultra-high definition image standard (3840 x 2160 pixels 4K resolution) has only been around for a few months, but already display makers are considering enhancement.

Never mind that the specification is already the farthest ahead of the curve.

Anyway, a report says that in 2014, and maybe even this year, Ultra HD TV panels will start to use wide color gamut (WCG) technology, bringing color saturation to NTSC 100%.

More 4K desktop monitors presented at CES. Is this the new standard?

More 4K desktop monitors presented at CES. Is this the new standard? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

The Ultra High Definition format seems not only to be one of the main theme's at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it also seems to be slowly making its way into computers.

Not long ago, Full-HD was considered state-of-the-art.

Now high-DPI displays are standard in mobile devices, and even laptop displays are beginning to out-resolve the 1920x1080 format.

So it seems only logical that large desktop monitors should feature even higher resolutions.

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

How this screen fares in practice has a two-fold answer. On the one hand text and images look incredibly sharp and detailed. Viewing high-quality photographs on this screen is a real pleasure.

Gaming on 4K resolution is truly a joy.

The incredible sharpness and outstanding colours definitely have added value, it's really something that needs to be experienced in person.

Current high-end graphics cards are not quite on the level of being able to provide smooth framerates on high quality settings, but fps-capped games can definitely be enjoyed in this resolution.

The future of PC gaming looks even more rosy on these types of displays.

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q review: 24-inch UHD / 4K monitor | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

We previously tested the 32-inch Sharp PN-K321H, which uses Sharps IGZO technology and was the first 4K monitor we tested.

Now Dell comes with three new 4K monitors, a 32-inch model, a 28-inch model and the 24-inch UP2414Q, subject of this review.

The recommended retails price of the UP2414Q is around 1,450 euro including VAT (about £1,225). While a lot of money, it's a steal compared to the 32-inch Sharp priced around £3,195 when it came out.

Not only that, the new Dell monitors are also supposed to have better colour-rendering than the Sharp PN-K321H.

Dell Unveils 32" Ultrasharp with 3840x2160 Native Resolution

Dell Unveils 32" Ultrasharp with 3840x2160 Native Resolution | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Dell recently pulled the wraps off their latest Ultrasharp 32″ display.

This gargantuan display is expected to be Dell’s flagship professional series monitor featuring an Ultra HD resolution of 3840×2160 (140ppi) based off of Sharp’s IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) display technology.

As expected of a Dell Ultrasharp display, the monitor will feature a wide color gamut of 1.07 billion colors, a whopping 64 times more colors than a standard TN panel based monitor.

No official word on pricing at this time although I’d expect the display to be priced somewhere in line with ASUS’s 31.5″ Ultra HD display, which currently runs for around $3,500.

Dell expects the monitor to be available in Q4 of this year.

This is what you want to watch for as pixel counts go up. Does the gamut also go up. The TV's I saw were not ready for 4K simply for this reason.
