RED is Building 6K Dragon Cameras Live at NAB in a Custom-Built Clean Room | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

In what is probably the wildest thing I have seen thus far at NAB 2013, RED has built a ridiculous clean room for its engineers to perform Dragon camera builds on the show floor – complete with windows for spectators to watch the magic happen.

Panasonic Plans for 2K, 4K and More with AVC Ultra | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Panasonic announced a new, shoulder-mount camcorder, the AG-HPX600, this afternoon.

Company officials called it "future proof" because recording with new AVC Ultra master-quality codecs will become an option sometime in 2013, as will the use of a new, highly efficient proxy format.

The lightweight camera — it weighs less than seven pounds — will ship sometime this fall for an expected list price of less than $16,000.

NAB: Speakers Discuss Early 8K Activity

NAB: Speakers Discuss Early 8K Activity | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

4K is a pervasive topic this week at the NAB Show, but hang on: The 8K flavor of Ultra HD -- representing a whopping 16 times the picture resolution as today’s HD -- is also generating discussion on some panels.

Jim Houston, principal of Starwatcher Digital and AMPAS Scitech Council member, even predicted that it would be as easy to accommodate 8K 120 frames per second in a decade as it is do 2K today.

To illustrate the difference in file sizes, he related that today dailies can account for roughly 2.5 TB of data per day, while 8K at 120 fps could bring that number to 187TB.

A 4K workflow as familiar as today’s HD

A 4K workflow as familiar as today’s HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

With the recent news that Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to begin broadcasting live Ultra high-definition signals into consumer’s homes for the finals of the football World Cup in Brazil in July 2014, and the launch of Eutelsat’s satellite-based 4K movie channel last summer, broadcasters around the world are beginning to look at the various parts of the 3840 × 2160 pixels production chain to make it a practical reality.

Many see 4K as the next big thing in consumer electronics and the broadcast industry—particularly satellite TV providers—is doing its part to make it happen.

Gerhard Lang, Vizrt’s Chief Engineering Officer, and his team of engineers has dedicated significant resources to optimizing the company’sViz Engine to process and manage the bandwidth-hungry 4K (and within five years, 8K) signals and make the workflow as seamless as it is with today’s HD (1080i and 720p) workflow.

NAB 2013 Preview

NAB 2013 Preview | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

If you make your living in the world of video, cinema, audio or post-production, NAB sets the tone and provides accurate indicators of where the industry (and technology) is headed.

Last year’s show was dominated by talk about the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera, 4K, 5K, and RAW capable cameras.

With Netflix announcing 4K streaming coming to subscribers within the next 2-years, this might be the year many production houses bite the bullet and upgrade from HD to 4K.
