Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV

Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix has ruined television forever.

Speaking as an unashamed hi-def snob who'd rather miss out on a show than have to watch it in grotty standard def, I've been champing at the bit to devour native 4K.

Unfortunately, having now been one of the first to watch Ultra HD streamed live from Netflix servers, my beloved Full HD just doesn't look that great any more.

The old acuity-meter has been irrevocably upgraded. Yes, 4K over the internet really is that good.

True. For now it's almost impossible to stream 4K to your TV. Were just not having fast enough internet to do that at this moment.

Mauro Tarantino's curator insight, April 11, 2014 4:07 AM

Cas Op de Beek's curator insight, April 11, 2014 5:29 AM

And now its time for that all the dutch channels are hd and maby 4k its about time!

New ultra-HD TVs will be Netflix-ready

New ultra-HD TVs will be Netflix-ready | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix says video streaming in ultra-high definition will "just work" for buyers of new UHD sets from Sony, LG, Samsung, Vizio and others.

That's because Ultra HD models from those makers will include the Netflix app and chips that decode signals in the so-called High Efficiency Video Coding standard, or HEVC.

YouTube and Netflix vow to introduce 4K content in 2014, but is Ultra HD ready to become the standard?

As the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show rapidly approaches, Samsung, LG, Sony and others are ready to release their latest and greatest televisions with support for 4K, which was officially deemed "Ultra High-Definition,” or “Ultra HD," by the Consumer Electronics Association in October 2012.

Ultra HD televisions slow to attract consumers

Ultra HD televisions slow to attract consumers | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

There probably aren't huge numbers of Boxing Day shoppers scouring flyers for a deal on a 4K Ultra HD TV, the next standard of high definition video.

"Whether it takes 18 months or five years people are going to adopt this technology.

It's something we want to be on the forefront of, it's our guess that ultra high definition is going to happen in a pretty significant way, unlike 3D," said NETFLIX chief product officer Neil Hunt in an interview earlier this year.

4K TV - If NFLX Doesn’t Kickstart Ultra HDTV, Could Porn Do It?

4K TV - If NFLX Doesn’t Kickstart Ultra HDTV, Could Porn Do It? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

The porn industry has been credited with driving new technical standards -- could Ultra HD TV quality save it and sell 4K TV sets too?

Two industries hard hit by the growth of web-based streaming video could be on a 4K TV collision course that benefits both: Porn and manufacturers of Ultra HD TV sets.

That may sound like an unlikely connection, but both are large industries that are struggling as consumers turn their backs on flat screen televisions and DVD players, increasingly choosing to watch streaming video offered by companies like Netflix on a tablet, PC or smartphone.

Netflix begins testing 4K streaming content, ahead of 2014 rollout

Netflix begins testing 4K streaming content, ahead of 2014 rollout | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix has begun the testing of 4K HD videos through streaming on its service.

While the 4K videos aren't the content you'd exactly sit around all day and watch, the company's testing is a step in the right direction to a wide-scale, working 4K delivery option.

Netflix has added seven 4K videos to its catalog over the last week.

One is titled "El Fuente: 24 MP, which promises "an example of 4K at 24 frames per second." It's not exactly the most interesting footage in the world, and simply shows kids playing in a fountain and people riding bicycles - all around just trying to highlight the powers of 4K.

The Ultra HD Battle Preview: Time Warner, Netflix Fight Over High-Quality Streaming

The Ultra HD Battle Preview: Time Warner, Netflix Fight Over High-Quality Streaming | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

This fight is a precursor to the battle we’ll see between streaming video services and Ultra HD television as the latter continues to evolve.

Streaming services like Netflix are the logical place to deploy 4K source material; the Blu-ray standard doesn’t currently allow 4K content and any upgrades to add the specification will break compatibility with current-generation players.

4K: What It Is And How Will It Affect You

4K: What It Is And How Will It Affect You | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

For the next few years at least, 4K looks set to be a realm for the super-rich and die-hard early adopters.

However, with the ever-popular Netflix looking be the mainstay of 4K Internet streaming and plenty of room for improvement when it comes to large home TV resolutions, the new standard does at least have a gap to slot into when prices fall, which they will.

There’s also a an avid PC gaming fan base that are already posting YouTube videos of 4K gaming sessions, although the future of 4K gaming on next-gen consoles looks less certain.

Netflix Expects 4K Streaming Within Two Years

Netflix Expects 4K Streaming Within Two Years | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix expects to be streaming UltraHD 4K content within a couple of years—which, if it happens, would be a watershed moment for the evolution of the next-generation of video resolution.

The upper end of HDTV offers a 2K resolution (2048 pixels over 1080 lines), but UltraHD ups the ante with 4K resolution (4096 pixels over 2160 lines).

It thus delivers a resolution of eight million pixels, or four times the resolution of HDTV. It’s a big change, and only a handful of films have been produced using 4K cameras.

Also, there is no broadcast standard for television feeds, nor compatible Blu-ray players or other STBs, meaning that the majority of TV companies have thus far opted out of spending the money to upgrade their equipment to deliver the content.

Thus, “streaming will be the best way to get the 4K picture into people's homes,” said Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix.
