Over the last couple of months murmurings swirled that electronics companies and TV networks were teaming up to record and show the Sochi Olympics in 4K.

After a bit of digging, TechRadar learned that the Olympics would indeed be shot in 4K and even 8K.

However, these UHD Olympic takes won't be viewable to the general public save for those visiting NHK-sponsored public viewings in Japan.

Otherwise, most of the footage will only be shown at special press viewing parties and other private events, making Sochi's 4K a more closed-off affair than the Super Hi-Vision (SHV) cinemas hosted by the BBC for the 2012 London Games.

A top executive at encoding technology vendor Elemental Technologies said he expects several broadcasters to deliver 4K Ultra HD programming from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and that multiple providers worldwide will launch 4K programming tiers in the second half of 2014.

I think this is a good improvement. Even if people are not at the stadium, they will know how it feels to be there. Last year's Olympics were not as high death as I thought they would be, so I'm excited to see what it will be.

Action from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will broadcast in Super Hi-Vision digital format for the first time, which has 16 times the resolution of HDTV with 22.2 surround sound, according to Games organisers.

NHK is one of the world’s few broadcasters to have an NHK roadmap, and has decided to ignore the halfway-house of 4K being pushed by TV manufacturers, which will be used at next year’s FIFA World cup in Brazil.


Plans are already drawn up to develop 8K coverage across Japan via satellite, before starting terrestrial broadcasts on Japan’s equivalent of Freeview.


Other public broadcasters may follow NHK’s lead, allowing 8K technology to develop before taking the expensive step of upgrading from HD.
