Panasonic jumps on 4K train with drool-worthy GH prototype

Panasonic jumps on 4K train with drool-worthy GH prototype | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

If 2013 was the year of the 'affordable' full-frame camera, 2014 is shaping up to be the year of 4K.

We've seen dirt cheap 4K monitors from Asus, Seiki, Dell and Philips, but haven't heard many new announcements from camera manufacturers... yet.

Panasonic is jumping onto the 4K train with a new prototype based on their excellent GH series.

Details are still scarce, but the spec that has us all drooling is the price: just south of $2,000.

If Panasonic manages to come in that low, they'll have the attention of the HD-DSLR world.

Engadget is also reporting further details: Video can be ouput via mini-HDMI in an uncompressed feed, while UHD can be recorded at a rate of 200 Mbps.

Another feature that grabbed our attention?

The camera will be able to snap photos while shooting 4K video.

Panasonic aims to turn corporate channels onto Ultra HD

Panasonic aims to turn corporate channels onto Ultra HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Panasonic is taking a turn with its TV development focusing more on retail and corporate customers than traditional retailer channels.

As an example, Panasonic announced that horse track Churchill Downs will display a new 171-foot by 90-foot tall 4K video board before this year's Kentucky Derby, at its press event here at the Consumer Electronics Show Monday.

Panasonic officials stressed the company's plan to provide Ultra HD and OLED displays for film production, signage and security systems "and even casinos like here in Las Vegas," said Rance Poehler, president of Panasonic Systems Communication Company.

NOTE:

The picture is an illustration of what Panasonic's 171-foot wide by 90-foot tall Ultra HD video board will look like at Churchill Downs.

Ultra-high expectations for Panasonic tablet

Ultra-high expectations for Panasonic tablet | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Panasonic has become the world’s first company to offer a tablet with a 4K, ultra-high-resolution display, but that ultra-high quality comes at an ultra-high price.

The Panasonic Toughpad 4K UT-MB5 may not have the catchiest name, but there’s a good chance that what it has to offer – a 20-inch screen – will catch on, especially with the architectural and creative industries plus tech-obsessed early adopters with big bags and even bigger pockets – it will retail for US$6000.

Panasonic's 4K Wearable Action Cam Offers a Unique Form and Heavy Compression

Panasonic's 4K Wearable Action Cam Offers a Unique Form and Heavy Compression | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

It features two components.

A cylindrical camera unit attaches to an earpiece, allowing the user to wear the camera near their face.

The camera unit is then tethered to a larger base unit, which presumably houses the processing power of the 4K camera.

Imagine how big that would be if Panasonic tried to stuff everything into a single unit.

That makes it even more impressive to think about what GoPro has done with its compact form factor, which has been around for years now.
