LG rolls up sleeves to gain early lead in 4K TV market

LG rolls up sleeves to gain early lead in 4K TV market | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

LG Electronics has lined up 68 new TV models in 25 series for its 2014 TV line-up, including 16 4K ultra high-definition TV models in 7 series that range from 49 inches to 55 inches to 65 inches to 79 inches to 84 inches to 98 inches to 105 inches.

The full line-up of 4K UHD TVs  represents LG’s preemptive marketing strategy to gain early lead in the fast-growing 4K UHD TV market, as TV makers in China are aggressively rolling out a wide range of low-cost, budget-priced 4K TV product offerings to undercut rivals in Japan and Korea on prices.

Polaroid is already planning to cut the price of its $1,000 4K TV

Polaroid is already planning to cut the price of its $1,000 4K TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Like the high school kid who doesn't get invited to go out partying with the in-crowd, Polaroid decided that the best way that it could turn some jaded heads was with a dramatic reinvention.

The company pulled up outside CES with a whole new range of cameras, tablets and a 4K TV, the latter of which was one of a small few that broke the $1,000 barrier.

When we went to examine the 50-inch UHD panel, an executive remarked that this un-smart TV would likely get a price cut before it hits store shelves in order to undercut rivals from Vizio and Kogan.

Will Your Next TV Be Ultra HD?

Will Your Next TV Be Ultra HD? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Unlike the 3-D TV trend, which quickly eroded into a tech fad in recent years, analysts say Ultra HD may actually catch on.

With screens that house four times more pixels than regular HD TVs, Ultra HD is a simple enough upgrade to gain widespread adoption in the next few years.

Aside from being visually jarring, 3-D required sometimes pricey special glasses and gave some people headaches.

Because Ultra HD content can be delivered over a standard high-speed Internet connection, it isn't likely to get bogged down in a format war that plagued the Blu-ray disc standard.

Samsung reveals a wild bendable TV prototype and its curved, 105-inch Ultra HD TV

Samsung reveals a wild bendable TV prototype and its curved, 105-inch Ultra HD TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Samsung has made a habit of demoing some off-the-wall television designs at CES, and this year is no different.

The strangest new design is a wild 85-inch prototype that the company's simply calling the "Bendable TV."

The demo unit switched between a flat panel and a curved screen at the touch of a button, with a mechanical system pushing out the edges of the screen to achieve the transformation.

It's eerie to see a 85-inch television bend before your eyes, and while it makes for a very impressive tech demo, we aren't sure what Samsung plans to do with the TV.

4K? Pah,

Toshiba's already working on something, you know, one better.

One of our eagle-eyed readers sent in this picture of a "5K" extra-wide UHD TV on the show floor.

Of course, like LG's 5K model, this is really just a 4K TV with a thousand extra pixels tacked on at the edges, but the plain technical facts shouldn't detract from this spectacular work of corporate one-upmanship.

Here’s whats coming at CES 2014 to make your home theater look antiquated

Here’s whats coming at CES 2014 to make your home theater look antiquated | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Never mind that nobody knows exactly what to call it (Ultra HD 4K, 4K Ultra HD, UHD, just Ultra HD, or just 4K), the industry has settled on the next big thing for television and, unlike the tepid response 3D technology received in years prior, Ultra HD is in a strong position to take over in the years to come.

It won’t just be Ultra HD televisions that will be making headlines this year, either.

4K content and the means by which it will be delivered to viewers is also coming.

LG Claims World’s Largest OLED TV Title With 77-inch Ultra HD Set - Digits - WSJ

LG Claims World’s Largest OLED TV Title With 77-inch Ultra HD Set - Digits - WSJ | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

LG is making the first declaration of awesomeness with a triple threat:

The company says it will debut a 77-inch OLED television that will boast the Ultra HD resolution – 3,480 x 2,160 pixels – and a curved screen.

This makes it the world’s largest OLED set, says LG, an important bragging point because OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology promises unparalleled contrast and response time, not to mention the thinnest screens.

Instead of requiring a separate light source to illuminate pixels, like LCD TVs, OLED pixels illuminate themselves when they receive electric current.

OLED has long been the “next great thing” in the TV business – and at the CES show – but TVs based on the technology have been slow to hit the market.

As for that curved shape, TV makers argue that it offers a more immersive picture.

4K Ultra HD television adoption will happen faster than anticipated

4K Ultra HD television adoption will happen faster than anticipated | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Despite being tempted by a number of great deals on televisions during Black Friday, I’ve already made up my mind that the next set I purchase will be 4K Ultra HD compatible.

4K Ultra HD televisions are expected to be the next big thing in home entertainment.

Unlike the short-lived 3D fad, 4K televisions will deliver real value with four times the resolution of current HD sets that populate the majority of households in the US.

Samsung is leading the way as it has increased its 4K television lineup from just three models last year to 10 this year, ranging in size from 50 inches up to the 110-inch monster that was on display at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Industry experts predict that just under half a million 4K sets will be sold this year versus just 60,000 during 2013.

Sony's new shape for TVs: The Wedge

Sony's new shape for TVs: The Wedge | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Sony's taking a new approach to TVs this year. While its competitors have been busy making their sets slimmer or giving their displays a gentle curve, Sony decided to focus on another shape.

It has unveiled a series of TV sets featuring what it's calling a wedge design — sets with deep, triangular sides that taper in thickness as they rise.

It's a striking and stylish look, and more importantly, it allows Sony to take advantage of the extra space.

Rather than building in a set of basic stereo speakers, Sony uses the added room to include three more-capable speakers on either side of some of the sets.

Samsung’s 4K TVs Are Getting All Bent Out of Shape

Samsung’s 4K TVs Are Getting All Bent Out of Shape | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Curved UHD TVs are going to be a big trend this year.

We’ve already an extremely promising one come out of LG’s camp (and it’s OLED, too!).

Unlike 4k resolutions and OLED technology which are clear advantages, the jury is still out on the curve.

The benefits are less quantifiable, and are far less obvious.

Plus, you’re increasing the footprint and making it less mountable. All that is to say that the curve is a trend which may or may not end up being just a passing fad, which means ultimately, you may or may not want to pay a premium for it.

Andre Bontems's insight:

.. Let us keep in mind that a flexible screen that can shift from curved to flat with the push of a button on the remote is already on display at the CES.
