Sony's new shape for TVs: The Wedge

Sony's new shape for TVs: The Wedge | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Sony's taking a new approach to TVs this year. While its competitors have been busy making their sets slimmer or giving their displays a gentle curve, Sony decided to focus on another shape.

It has unveiled a series of TV sets featuring what it's calling a wedge design — sets with deep, triangular sides that taper in thickness as they rise.

It's a striking and stylish look, and more importantly, it allows Sony to take advantage of the extra space.

Rather than building in a set of basic stereo speakers, Sony uses the added room to include three more-capable speakers on either side of some of the sets.

Sony Pictures’ Rita Belda on Film Grain, 4K, and Restoring a Screwball Classic

Sony Pictures’ Rita Belda on Film Grain, 4K, and Restoring a Screwball Classic | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Leading up to the launch of Sony's Video Unlimited 4K movie downloading service, the Frank Capra classic — and by most accounts the first "screwball" comedy — It Happened One Night (1934) got a new 4K master.

Dating to an era when camera negatives were routinely used to strike release prints, the original negative for It Happened One Night had been damaged from overuse.

Still, that's where this restoration process began.

A new wet-gate fine-grain master was made from the camera negative, and then scanned at 4K.

The scan was then cleaned up by Prasad Corporation, which removed dirt, tears, scratches, and other imperfections from the image.

The final results were graded at 4K resolution on a Baselight system at Colorworks, the DI facility owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), which paid special attention to matching the look of the fine-grain print scans to lower-quality dupe frames that had been used to replace footage that was in especially bad shape.

Product of the Year, Awards 2013 – a second win for this brilliant movie machine.

There’s no doubt a feature like the 4K upscaling will only appeal to those who have deep pockets or who want to consider themselves futureproofed should a flotilla of 4K screens arrive in the near future.

But looking past that, the Sony BDP-S790 is still a superb Blu-ray player, positively revelling in great features and excellent picture performance. Sony has definitely got a winner on its hands.

We’ll have to wait until Sony announces the phone to confirm these details, however. That seems likely to happen at Mobile World Congress, another big trade show, happening in February in Barcelona.

New Sony 4K Handycam FDR-AX100

New Sony 4K Handycam FDR-AX100 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

I wasn’t expecting much from a $2K 4K Handycam but after watching this hyper sharp and detailed sample on YouTube I was kind of blown away by the FDR-AX100.

I have said before that if they wanted to sell UltraHD TV’s to the masses content would have to be created by the consumers since delivery is still an issue.

This is a little proof of that.

Nevertheless it’s very impressive and it’s even compressed for YouTube.

This camera is going to be tough to get when it’s available in March with an image and price this good.

We are moving fast into 4K.

Buckle up people!

For Japan, TV technology is a high priority

For Japan, TV technology is a high priority | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

While many TV makers are working on developing 4K technology, Japan is looking beyond.

In June, more than 20 competing Japanese manufacturers and broadcasters - including Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, NTV and the NHK - put aside their differences and joined forces in a government-backed collaborative forum called "NexTV-F."

Their goals are simple: promote the development and adoption of UHD TV, and ensure that Japan is first in the world to broadcast in 8K.

8K - known as "Super Hi-Vision" in Japan - boasts four times the resolution of 4K, and 16 times that of current full HD.

The U.N.'s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) finalized the standard last year, and some in the industry have suggested it may be the highest practical resolution for consumer displays.

What is Triluminos Color on a 4K UHD TV?

TRILUMINOS is Sony's exclusive new technology that allows for far greater color tones and textures to be displayed on the screen.

In simple terms you could think of TRILUMINOS as simply a bigger box of color pencils to draw an image on the screen.

A conventional display only has a limited box of color pencils to draw an image, whereas a TRILUMINOS display has a bigger box of color pencils with more shades of Blue, Red and Green color pencils.

As a result a TRILUMINOS display can reproduce more natural colors thanks to the expanded color gamut and display various shades of colors closer to reality than a conventional display.

A TRILUMINOS display can output true, natural shades of colours – like hard-to-reproduce reds, greens and blues.

Faces look better, too, with rich, lifelike skin tones.

The company is promising a cornucopia of 4K products at January's International CES as it aims to push the technology further into the mainstream while rebuilding its reputation as a serious alternative to Apple for aspirational tech-savvy consumers.

Thanks to the speed in which the technology world moves, it's easy to forget just how cool Sony and its products used to be.

So much so that Steve Jobs himself used to use the company as a benchmark for where he wanted Apple to be in terms of design and desirability.

... The picture from this thing is better than anything I have seen at the best New York theaters!

... Really nice TV, this may set new levels for picture quality like 720, 1080, did when they first came out. The colors are amazing add to that the detail and you feel like it’s not a picture but the real thing.

... The fact that 1080p can look this good upscaled is exciting in itself!
