8K Train Can't Be Stopped

8K Train Can't Be Stopped | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

While U.S. broadcasters are wrestling with how and when to utilize 4K (aka Ultra High Definition or UHDTV) in their production workflows, or if at all, the Japanese broadcast industry is determined to move to a higher resolution level, namely 8K.

That's 16 times the resolution of 1080-line HD, or 7680 × 4320 (33.1 megapixels, 12-bit processing). Uncompressed, an 8K 60fps image produces a data rate of about 24 Gbps.

Japan's national broadcaster, NHK, plans to deploy equipment that complies with the bandwidth-hungry format at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

In January of this year, NHK's science and research laboratories said it successfully transmitted 8K television signals via a single standard UHF terrestrial broadcast channel over a distance of 27 km.

The field test, conducted on Jan. 20 was performed as a follow-up to a May 2012 demonstration in which the UHD signal was sent slightly more than four km.

For all those professionals trying to decide whether now is the time to buy a 4K camera, talk and testing of 8K systems is not doing anyone any favors.

NHK, Japan’s national television broadcaster, has revealed plans to begin transmissions in 2016 using the new Super Hi-Vision format, which features a resolution 16 times higher than the current HDTV standards.

Having been in development in part by NHK for the last few years, the 7,680 pixels by 4,320 pixels resolution was given its first trial broadcast during last summer’s London Olympics.

Ultra HD at International CES 2014

Ultra HD at International CES 2014 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

8K sets are on the way!

What’s better than 4K? 8K, of course.

8K UHDTV (4320p) will tout screens that are 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall, that’s 33.2 megapixels which is sixteen times more pixels than a current 1080p HDTV.

Forget home theater; we’re talking home IMAX®.

Will 8K sets replace 4K sets before there is enough 4K content to help sell 4K sets?

We know that the pace of technological change is faster than it has ever been, and is accelerating.

Moore’s Law (The density of transistors on silicon will double approximately every 18 months), posited by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965, has been compressed to 8 to 12 months.

So, will the technology advance so far ahead of the content industry that consumers will ignore 4K?

It just might.

Introducing 8K: The Final Frontier?

Introducing 8K: The Final Frontier? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Keeping apace with camera technology is like running a race where the finish line keeps on moving.

Just as the next generation of games consoles go on sale boasting the ability to display 4K images (although for the moment only those with the salary of a pro-footballer can afford screens able to make use of all those pixels) Japanese broadcaster NHK has started to film and broadcast events in 8K.

NHK are so excited about the technology that they have commissioned filmmakers to make short films showcasing 8K, which were screened at the recent Tokyo International Film Festival.

Netflix begins testing 4K streaming content, ahead of 2014 rollout

Netflix begins testing 4K streaming content, ahead of 2014 rollout | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix has begun the testing of 4K HD videos through streaming on its service.

While the 4K videos aren't the content you'd exactly sit around all day and watch, the company's testing is a step in the right direction to a wide-scale, working 4K delivery option.

Netflix has added seven 4K videos to its catalog over the last week.

One is titled "El Fuente: 24 MP, which promises "an example of 4K at 24 frames per second." It's not exactly the most interesting footage in the world, and simply shows kids playing in a fountain and people riding bicycles - all around just trying to highlight the powers of 4K.

Working in 4K UltraHD with the Sony FDR-AX1

Working in 4K UltraHD with the Sony FDR-AX1 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

...

Overall, I’m pleased with this purchase.

Looking at the footage from this camera reminds me of my first foray into 1080 HD with the Canon XH-A1.

After years of working in standard definition, the Canon’s 1440×1080 resolution was a breath of fresh air.

Now, after years working with HD, the Sony’s 3840×2160 resolution is quite a sight.

But like the Canon, the general “feel” of the footage is definitely that of a first generation prosumer camera. Looking at the video at 100%, I can see some artifacting and the image seems to be slightly grainy. But again, I may be spoiled after working with larger sensor DSLRs for so long.

But until a reasonably-priced DSLR or MFT camera that can shoot 4K is released, I’m sure to get plenty of use from the Sony.

But the benefits of high resolution imaging are not exactly new.

Ultra high-definition (UHD) Apple TVs with 65-inch and 55-inch frameless screens are likely to launch by the end of next year, according to Advanced Research Japan analyst Masahiko Ishino.

The TVs will probably sell at anywhere from US$1,500 to US$2,500.

One of Apple's goals is to do away with all of the tuners and cables required for conventional TVs.

Will 2014 Be the Year of 4K?

Will 2014 Be the Year of 4K? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

What will 2014 hold for the advancement of 4K? If the recent IBC 2013 in Amsterdam is any indication, 4K technology, for TV and film, is here to stay.

Skeptics can point out that, not long ago, 3D was the darling of new technologies.

But it's worth noting that, though stereo 3D is out of favor, it hasn't disappeared, still a go-to technology for Hollywood blockbusters like Gravity and restorations (see Jaws and The Wizard of Oz).

IBC 2013 pushed 4K down the road, with 4K TV distribution demonstrations and partnerships, new cameras and other new products.

Prognosticators can now set their sights on NAB 2014, but all signs point to higher resolution 2014.

NHK is one of the world’s few broadcasters to have an NHK roadmap, and has decided to ignore the halfway-house of 4K being pushed by TV manufacturers, which will be used at next year’s FIFA World cup in Brazil.

Plans are already drawn up to develop 8K coverage across Japan via satellite, before starting terrestrial broadcasts on Japan’s equivalent of Freeview.

Other public broadcasters may follow NHK’s lead, allowing 8K technology to develop before taking the expensive step of upgrading from HD.
