Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV

Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix has ruined television forever.

Speaking as an unashamed hi-def snob who'd rather miss out on a show than have to watch it in grotty standard def, I've been champing at the bit to devour native 4K.

Unfortunately, having now been one of the first to watch Ultra HD streamed live from Netflix servers, my beloved Full HD just doesn't look that great any more.

The old acuity-meter has been irrevocably upgraded. Yes, 4K over the internet really is that good.

Wouter de Kort's curator insight, April 11, 2014 3:06 AM

True. For now it's almost impossible to stream 4K to your TV. Were just not having fast enough internet to do that at this moment.

Mauro Tarantino's curator insight, April 11, 2014 4:07 AM

Cas Op de Beek's curator insight, April 11, 2014 5:29 AM

And now its time for that all the dutch channels are hd and maby 4k its about time!

Broadcasters Not So Eager to Switch to UHDTV

Broadcasters Not So Eager to Switch to UHDTV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

There's a lot of discussion about 4K--also known in the broadcast and consumer electronics worlds as UHDTV--production and whether it is practical for broadcasters to distribute 4K signals--it requires four times the bandwidth of current 1.5 Gbps infrastructures to get into the home.

Broadcasters covering live events have utilized the technology as part of an overall HD sports telecast in order to provide viewers with captivating high-resolution, slow-motion replays and critical analysis of disputed plays.

With little demand from consumers for UHDTV sets, however, it might take a while before we see activity in this space at the local OTA station level.

Indeed, with 4K content now available on YouTube, it's entirely possible that viewers will be watching UHDTV content via the Internet well before it can become a viable broadcast standard.

IBM Sets New Speed Record for Big Data

IBM Sets New Speed Record for Big Data | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

IBM today announced that it has achieved a new technological advancement that will help improve Internet speeds to 200 - 400 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) at extremely low power.

The speed boost is based on a device that can be used to improve transferring Big Data between clouds and data centers four times faster than current technology.

At this speed 160 Gigabytes, the equivalent of a two-hour, 4K ultra-high definition movie or 40,000 songs, could be downloaded in only a few seconds.

The device was presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.

Hollywood Eyes High Dynamic Range Imagery

Hollywood Eyes High Dynamic Range Imagery | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Ultra HD is a huge story at the International CES. But many also believe that resolution alone is not enough to entice consumers to make the switch from their current TVs.

Many in Hollywood’s engineering community believe it will also take a wider color gamut, higher dynamic range and higher frame rates to make the most noticeable improvement over today’s HD.

Dolby, Technicolor and Sony are all presenting their plans to move the industry in this direction, this week at CES.

Meanwhile Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), the consortium behind the cloud-based Digital HD service UltraViolet, is looking into adding  support not just for 4K but for higher dynamic range and related features.

The Importance of HEVC in the future of Video Delivery

The Importance of HEVC in the future of Video Delivery | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding or H.265) is one of the most important technologies to have emerged in the TV industry in the last decade, as it results in a huge cost savings for operators by halving the bit rates necessary to deliver video.

HEVC allows operators to do more with less at a time when they are struggling to manage the heavy demands that video streaming puts on their networks and it will pave the way for the future of 4K UHDTV content.
