"Usable" Workspace Resolution at 4K UHD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

With all the talk at CES being about 4k and a number of new options having come out in the last month and about to hit the table, I wanted to follow up with a discussion about how physical monitor size really matters if you want to use that additional resolution to increase your workspace resolution.

...

Personally I think 50" is the sweet spot but you gotta have a huge desk for that.

The Myth of 4K Ultra HD TV Superiority: Why A Cheap TV with More Pixels is Still Just a Cheap TV

The Myth of 4K Ultra HD TV Superiority: Why A Cheap TV with More Pixels is Still Just a Cheap TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Until 4K Ultra HD content becomes more widely available, and unless you need a giant screen where the extra pixels are necessary, our recommendation is to stick with regular old 1080p HDTV.

There are a lot more choices, including both LED/LCD and plasma TVs, a better selection of features, and pricing that won't break the bank.

Europe fertile ground for 4K

Europe fertile ground for 4K | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Europe has not traditionally been early-adopter territory for new TV technologies, partly for historical reasons associated with encoding for analog transmissions, which meant the need for improvements was less than in North America.

This was certainly the case for HD, which was introduced much earlier in the U.S. and also 3-D, which has been even more of a damp squib in Europe than elsewhere.

Yet, there are signs that 4K is going to buck that trend. Certainly visitors to the recent MIPTV (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision)annual TV programming market event in Cannes, France, came away with that impression.

Back to the Future with 4K: Large-Sensor Motion Picture Cameras in 2013

Back to the Future with 4K: Large-Sensor Motion Picture Cameras in 2013 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

A motion picture camera used to be a light-sealed box with a strip of film running through it. Was it easy to thread? Did it run quiet? How bright was the viewfinder?

Today’s cameras are exponentially more complex.

They are literal bundles of separate technologies, each lurching forward at a different rate.

To understand today’s cameras, you must understand the parts to understand the whole.

If you make your living in the world of video, cinema, audio or post-production, NAB sets the tone and provides accurate indicators of where the industry (and technology) is headed.

Last year’s show was dominated by talk about the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera, 4K, 5K, and RAW capable cameras.

With Netflix announcing 4K streaming coming to subscribers within the next 2-years, this might be the year many production houses bite the bullet and upgrade from HD to 4K.

Suppose they gave us 4K HD and nobody really cared? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

So what of Ultra HD 4K?

Will there ever be a market for that much resolution in the home?

“Time will tell,” says Panasonic’s Tsuyuzaki. “Keep in mind, people are already working on 8K. But I think 3D, IPTV [TV content delivered via Internet protocol rather than broadcast, cable or satellite] and mobile are the three areas where display technology is really going to evolve in the next few years.”

Translation: Forget 4K for now. Sit back, relax and enjoy your new HD flat screen. It’s going to be around a long while.

2013 NAB Show Anticipated Trends

2013 NAB Show Anticipated Trends | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

When you look in the rear view mirror of the annual NAB Show, there ought to be a collection of both the past and future: an honest look at what hasn’t worked; what’s awaiting the industry a few months down the line; what’s coming 10 years into the future.

Television broadcasting needs to drive for a new and more capable next-gen platform,” said Mark Aitken, vice president of advanced technology at Sinclair Broadcast. For many broadcasters and for the networks, it’s 4K; for others it’s the promise of mobile TV.

The Upcoming Intel Media Box Could Be the Gateway to 4K

The Upcoming Intel Media Box Could Be the Gateway to 4K | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Intel announced Wednesday that its fourth-generation Haswell processors would support 4K resolution.

That’s great news for computers, but even better news if that technology finds its way into Intel’s upcoming set-top box.

With the Iris graphics news and Intel’s desire to break into the TV market with an all-in-one set-top box, the company could deliver the first real 4K content device.

And that would be great, because the 4K transition needs a device that actually pushes content to those expensive TVs.

A 4K workflow as familiar as today’s HD

A 4K workflow as familiar as today’s HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

With the recent news that Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to begin broadcasting live Ultra high-definition signals into consumer’s homes for the finals of the football World Cup in Brazil in July 2014, and the launch of Eutelsat’s satellite-based 4K movie channel last summer, broadcasters around the world are beginning to look at the various parts of the 3840 × 2160 pixels production chain to make it a practical reality.

Many see 4K as the next big thing in consumer electronics and the broadcast industry—particularly satellite TV providers—is doing its part to make it happen.

Gerhard Lang, Vizrt’s Chief Engineering Officer, and his team of engineers has dedicated significant resources to optimizing the company’sViz Engine to process and manage the bandwidth-hungry 4K (and within five years, 8K) signals and make the workflow as seamless as it is with today’s HD (1080i and 720p) workflow.
