We may be seeing the first glimpses of Ultra HD/4K gaming becoming an affordable possibility for mainstream consumers.
Earlier this week the company released a new pair of UltraSharp Ultra HD panels geared toward graphics professionals, but also teased a future 3840 x 2160 display clocking in at less than $1000.
UltraHD, also commonly known as 4K, packs four times the resolution of Full HD (1080p), but until now has been a luxurious display option reserved for design professionals and wealthy A/V enthusiasts.
Despite having “the wow factor” Ultra High Definition take-up faces a number of challenges, including a slow TV replacement cycle among consumers, according to LG Electronics’ director of EU innovation R&D, Stuart Savage.
Speaking at the Digital World Summit in London this week, Savage warned that like HD before it, UHD will take a long time to become a mass-market proposition, and warned that TV buying trends have slipped back into a roughly seven-year cycle.
Two standards are actually being developed. Simply called UHDTV1 and UHDTV2, the easiest way to distinguish them is by their frame dimensions.
UHDTV1 would have a 4k resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels whereas UHDTV2 would have a whopping 8k resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels.
The standards would contain 10 and 12 bit depth, with chroma subsampling options at 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0. 8 bit, as well as interlacing and fractional framerates, would be discarded.
The likely base framerate would be 120 frames per second, due in part that 120 is divisible by many popular framerates such as 24, 30, and 60.
At such a high framerate, the “flicker fusion threshold,” a technical term for image flicker, would be greatly reduced.

Two industries hard hit by the growth of web-based streaming video could be on a 4K TV collision course that benefits both: Porn and manufacturers of Ultra HD TV sets.

The meeting agreed that all of these elements will be important in the short or long term. The term ‘pixel’ is used as an abbreviation for ‘picture element’. The meeting’s view is summed up by the phrase UHDTV with ‘not just more pixels, but better pixels’.
After prematurely letting the cat out of the bag with some weekend website leaks, Dell announced two new Ultra HD "4K" UltraSharp monitors on Monday:
A 31.5-inch model as well as a 24-inch version, with both running at full 3840-by-2160-pixel resolution.
Ultra high definition displays are coming your way and fast.
So if you decide to pull the trigger on a screen with four times the resolution of 1080p, where are you going to get content from?
As the price of 4K or UHDTVs comes down rapidly, getting content is probably the biggest question on consumers minds.

Taiwan-based LED packaging houses, mainly Everlight Electronics, Lextar Electronics and Unity Opto Technology, are set to start producing 15mm OD (optical distance) backlight units (BLUs) specifically for use in direct-type backlit Ultra HD LCD TVs at the end of 2013, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.15mm OD BLUs can reduce the thickness of direct-type LED-backlit LCD TVs, and the number of LED chips used in Ultra HD TV BLUs is 1.5-2 times that for Full HD models of the same size, the sources said.
