Broadcasters Not So Eager to Switch to UHDTV

Broadcasters Not So Eager to Switch to UHDTV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

There's a lot of discussion about 4K--also known in the broadcast and consumer electronics worlds as UHDTV--production and whether it is practical for broadcasters to distribute 4K signals--it requires four times the bandwidth of current 1.5 Gbps infrastructures to get into the home.

Broadcasters covering live events have utilized the technology as part of an overall HD sports telecast in order to provide viewers with captivating high-resolution, slow-motion replays and critical analysis of disputed plays.

With little demand from consumers for UHDTV sets, however, it might take a while before we see activity in this space at the local OTA station level.

Indeed, with 4K content now available on YouTube, it's entirely possible that viewers will be watching UHDTV content via the Internet well before it can become a viable broadcast standard.

Future is fuzzy for 4K, UltraHigh Definition TVs

Future is fuzzy for 4K, UltraHigh Definition TVs | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Around this time last year, TV manufacturers trumpeted the arrival of 4K ultra-high-definition televisions.

The pricey and often humongous TVs pack in four times as many pixels as top-of-the-line HD sets.

But new technology often faces a chicken-and-egg problem.

Even if you bought a 4K UHD TV, what would you watch on it?

Very few movies support the new resolution. Some Blu-ray players promise to convert regular high-definition video to something approximating ultra high definition, but such techniques are stopgap solutions while TV makers wait for Hollywood to catch up.

Instead, online companies such as Netflix and YouTube have taken the lead.

Making Room for UHDTV

Making Room for UHDTV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

We discussed the many aspects of UHD including larger color space, high dynamic range, higher frame rates in addition to the increased resolution.
I talked about how at Iowa Public Television, we work in an uncompressed environment when creating shows in our studio and how that has simplified our infrastructure.

But as I look forward to implementing UHD, even at a relatively small facility, the laws of physics and the laws of economics seem to be conspiring against the concept of the uncompressed backbone.

What is “television” anymore? Is it a piece of hardware? Cable or satellite service?  Over-the-top streaming from companies like Netflix and Amazon? Something you watch on a tablet or smartphone?

CES 2014 provided an answer to those questions: It’s all of those and more.

Philips has put together a great looking monitor that's easy on the eyes and impresses display aficionados such as ourselves.

We'll have to reserve our final judgment on the Brilliance 288P until we can do something other than watch a looping demo, but it looks promising as a 4K panel that blows most TN panels out of the water.

If Philips can deliver something that can truly play Battlefield 4 and other 4K capable games at 60fps, the Dutch technology company might have a 4K winner on its hands.

Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV

Why Netflix in Ultra HD will ruin TV | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Netflix has ruined television forever.

Speaking as an unashamed hi-def snob who'd rather miss out on a show than have to watch it in grotty standard def, I've been champing at the bit to devour native 4K.

Unfortunately, having now been one of the first to watch Ultra HD streamed live from Netflix servers, my beloved Full HD just doesn't look that great any more.

The old acuity-meter has been irrevocably upgraded. Yes, 4K over the internet really is that good.

Wouter de Kort's curator insight, April 11, 2014 3:06 AM

True. For now it's almost impossible to stream 4K to your TV. Were just not having fast enough internet to do that at this moment.

Mauro Tarantino's curator insight, April 11, 2014 4:07 AM

Cas Op de Beek's curator insight, April 11, 2014 5:29 AM

And now its time for that all the dutch channels are hd and maby 4k its about time!

UHD TV sharper image with large screen and much more... | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Early adopters will be very disappointed with what the ultra high definition televisions can currently offer.

Based on the way our eyes perceive the real world, it's been calculated that UHD is only noticeable at normal viewing distances when the screen is larger than 70 inches in size.

Buy a 50-inch UHD screen and most viewers will not be able to pick the difference between it and a regular HD screen at normal viewing distances, even when watching UHD content.

Despite this, the UHD display will likely cost four times as much.

Panasonic's 4K Wearable Action Cam Offers a Unique Form and Heavy Compression

Panasonic's 4K Wearable Action Cam Offers a Unique Form and Heavy Compression | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

It features two components.

A cylindrical camera unit attaches to an earpiece, allowing the user to wear the camera near their face.

The camera unit is then tethered to a larger base unit, which presumably houses the processing power of the 4K camera.

Imagine how big that would be if Panasonic tried to stuff everything into a single unit.

That makes it even more impressive to think about what GoPro has done with its compact form factor, which has been around for years now.

Your next TV Will it be Ultra HD

Your next TV Will it be Ultra HD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

After attempts to hawk 3-D and OLED TVs fizzled in recent years, television manufacturers are taking small steps toward making a new technology, Ultra HD, more viable for mainstream consumers.

It's the first TV format to be driven by the Internet video-streaming phenomenon, and at the International CES gadget show this week, major streaming players Netflix and Amazon said they'll offer movies and TV shows in the format, and Sharp introduced a relatively inexpensive TV with near-Ultra HD quality.

The moves are meant to coax consumers to pedal faster on their TV upgrade cycles.

At the moment, most Americans buy new TVs about once every seven years. TV manufacturers would love to create another wave of buying like the one that sent millions of people to stores a few years ago to upgrade from standard definition, tube TVs to flat-screen HD models.

CES 2014 - First look at the latest Chinese Ultra HD and OLED TVs

CES 2014 - First look at the latest Chinese Ultra HD and OLED TVs | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Chinese manufacturers Hisense, TCL and Konka give the big boys a run for their money!

As we walked around the huge stands for LG and Samsung at this year’s CES, we realised there was a time when the Korean manufacturers were considered inferior to their Japanese competitors.

How things have changed and now LG and Samsung dominate the TV market whilst the big Japanese names are struggling to even remain relevant.

However the South Koreans had better not get too complacent because China’s emergence as a global economic power means it can only be a matter of time before their consumer electronics companies begin to have a similar impact.

In fact if CES 2014 is remembered for anything it might well be as the year that the Chinese manufacturers truly arrived and if one company can be seen as leading the way it’s Hisense.
