Will 4K (Ultra HD) Go The Way of 3D…and the Dodo?

Will 4K (Ultra HD) Go The Way of 3D…and the Dodo? | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Nobody is in a position to answer the title question of this post.

What we can say is, Ultra HD has the ability to improve 1080p content noticeably on larger displays, and without glasses.

In that way, it has a leg up on 3D.

And, it’s really another rung in the ladder, of which “Enhanced Definition” was one (remember those fuzzy days?) followed by 720p/1080i, 1080p, 1080p high refresh, and of course 1080p 3D, though I think someone sawed through that last rung.

We step up to Ultra HD, but the ladder goes higher.

8K is out there, not in someones imagination, it’s really being done.

And I’m afraid 3D hasn’t taken it’s last bow either.

Buy an Ultra HD display today and get at least some picture improvement of your existing 1080p, but don’t hold your breath for real Ultra HD content.

And I wouldn’t pay up too hard, the ladder is, after all, still extending.

4K TVs in 10% N American homes by 2018

4K TVs in 10% N American homes by 2018 | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

Asia-Pacific, notably, China, is expected to lead 4K (or Ultra HD) TV unit shipments according to ABI Research’s First Screen Video Devices and Cloud Video and Video Hardware Research Services.

However, the North American market is anticipated to be the first region to eclipse 5 per cent (in 2017) and 10 per cent (by end of 2018) of TV households.

Despite limited 4K content, declining 4K TV prices will facilitate the expansion of the installed base through normal upgrade cycles.

TV makers fire up hype machine over UltraHD

TV makers fire up hype machine over UltraHD | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

TV makers have been in search of the next big thing since 3-D TV sets sputtered in the marketplace.

But some industry analysts warn that sharper picture alone may not be enough to coax people to spend thousands of dollars on a new set.

The advantages are not as clear as they were in the shift more than a decade ago from old-fashioned analog TVs to high definition, which offered a radically improved picture quality as well as a dramatically slimmer shape than the bulky cathode-ray tube sets that once dominated living rooms.

"It is simply not as compelling as the switch from regular analog TV to high definition," said Colin Dixon, founder of research firm NScreenMedia. "The issue here is the switch from (high definition) to 4K is not as big of a quality upgrade."

Recording in 4K - Issues and Workflows

Recording in 4K - Issues and Workflows | Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) | Scoop.it

4K recording is an interesting issue as there is currently relatively little in agreed upon format standards for delivery,” said Mitch Gross, Director of Communications, Convergent Design.

“There are some cameras and there are some displays, and then there's a whole lot of open space in between them.

We believe that for 4K to become increasingly adopted this space must be filled with all sorts of hardware and software solutions.”
