Here some updated notes from my research last year into HEVC & UHDTV. I've aimed this at a general audience.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil a new 4K ULTRA HD TV with quantum dot technology as a new component of its expanded TV lineup at the 2015 International CES®, Jan. 6-9 in Las Vegas .
LG's 4K ULTRA HD TVs with quantum dot technology will offer a wider colour palette and improved colour saturation than conventional LCD TVs and will be available in 2015 to complement LG's other ULTRA HD TV and OLED TV offerings.
What are Quantum Dots, and how could they help your next TV?
Samsung UE55F9000 brings you worthwhile technology and seems to be all set for a bright 4K future.

Back in 2013, we saw the first signs that curved screens might be the next "3D" as both Samsung and LG showed off curved OLED TV.
In 2014 we were once again presented with this trend as we joined CES 2014, now only in a much larger scale as Samsung launched curved LCD panels.
Have the TV manufacturers found a solution to a problem we didn't even know existed?
And if so, what is this mysterious problem that they are trying to fix?
Let's find out.
South Korea will is trying to secure a competitive edge before the expected sales boom from global sports events,.
South Korea also plans to foster some 150 UHD experts through customized education programs and send 10 candidates for further training at overseas UHD-related firms.
The LG G3 is set to come packed with:
The Blackmagic URSA was designed to be the beastly cinema camera that everyone wanted the 2.5K and 4K Blackmagic cameras to be.
After rigging them out for higher end productions, the other BMCC cameras became larger than the URSA.
As a result, Blackmagic took the key wishlist items and packaged them into a full size production camera with little compromise.
Notably, the body and components are built to be upgraded.
While the URSA is currently configured with a 4K sensor capable of delivering 60fps, the rest of the camera can handle up to an 8K sensor at 30fps.
20th Century Fox and Samsung are getting the ball rolling for UHD owners (and prospective owners) by partnering up to deliver more UHD content.
With 10x more Ultra HD sets expected to be sold this year it may be time for UHD to take hold in the marketplace.
To our surprise, not only did the curved model seem more immersive, it also had noticeably wider viewing angles.
The reason could be due to the curvature radius of 4200mm chosen by Samsung, which does seem like the ideal sweet spot.
So if you’re wondering if bendy tellies are ideal for the living room, the answer is a resounding yes.
f you aren’t ready for 4K TVs yet, you could wait a few more years for the next big thing—8K.
Rave comments were heard in front of Sharp’s latest prototype 8K display at the Ceatec electronics expo outside Tokyo this week as the company tries to spark interest in the next level of dazzling displays.
The Atomos Shogun was one of the most anticipated video products of 2014. The 4K external recorder was announced at the NAB show way back in April.
Units finally started to ship just before Christmas and it has been a long and patient wait for customers to get their hands on one.
Overall the Shogun ticks a lot of boxes and I think most users will be very happy with it.
At the end of the day the Shogun delivers what it promises – 4K recording on a budget, a great screen and easy to use interface.

Andre Bontems's insight:
It looks promising ... and what about a BlackMagic Hyperdeck with a screen for half the price of the Atomos?
We all thought 2014 would finally be the year 4K took off in a big way. Did it? Well it stuttered, stumbled and never really got off the ground.
With YouTube and Vimeo offering various ways of uploading and downloading 4K material there is now a genuine reason to deliver in 4K.
2015 will no doubt see 4K take another step forward. Just how far forward it goes we will have to wait and see.

The government of Japan is working with cable operators, broadcasters, TV manufacturers and a number of other constituencies with the goal of establishing ubiquitous 4K services across Japan's TV industry by 2016, and broad 8K services in time for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The USA will overtake China in 2020 to become the leading country in terms of UHD TV household penetration.

LG Display Co. proclaimed this year as the new “first year of 3D,” as it heralds a new era of Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.
The TV giant vows to lead the global 3D market this year by focusing on China.
Ever since the first 3D TV rolled out in 2011, the company has enjoyed its status as a forerunner in 3D-related technology, but it hasn’t been able to capitalize on it owing to the stagnancy of the 3D TV market.
The company is aiming at reigniting 3D boom by using the popularity of UHD TV.
Netflix has ruined television forever.
Speaking as an unashamed hi-def snob who'd rather miss out on a show than have to watch it in grotty standard def, I've been champing at the bit to devour native 4K.
Along with the new URSA production camera, Blackmagic also announced an exciting Studio Camera version of its popular BMCC line.
The HD camera captures 1080/60p with 1 x 3G-SDI 10-bit 4:2:2 output, while the 4K model captures 2160/60p and offers 12G-SDI output for 4K capture to an external device.
The camera has no built-in recorder option; however, a Hyperdeck Shuttle can be attached for on-location recording.
The HD version of the BMSC should begin shipping this month, while the 4K version should begin shipping in July.
It's still early in the game, but here's everything you need to know about moving to the next-generation video codec.
As an overview, HEVC offers two key advantages over the reigning codec king, H.264: quality equivalent to H.264 at half the data rate and the ability to deliver 4K video, or Ultra HD video (UHD).
